November 15, 2025
On November 15, 2025, the torches of Freemasonry will be lit anew in California with the constitution of the Grand Orient of California.
This date marks the rebirth of a Masonic Orient in our land — consecrated to Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. It is the beginning of a new jurisdiction where women and men, united in fraternity, may labor freely for self-improvement, truth, and the progress of humanity.
The Grand Orient of California is a provisional Masonic jurisdiction, established in the Enlightenment tradition of liberal and nondogmatic Freemasonry.
Its founding lodges and provisional officers are now laboring to draft its Constitution and General Regulations, design its seal, and prepare the framework by which it will operate.
The objective of this new jurisdiction will be to practice Freemasonry based on the values of liberty, equality, and fraternity, with the complete and undivided affirmation of absolute freedom of conscience.
The Grand Orient of California will belong to the family of Grand Orient Freemasonry, a form of Masonry that has flourished since the 18th century. It is:
Philanthropic, philosophical, and progressive – devoted to the search for truth, the study of morality, and the practice of solidarity.
Founded on principles – mutual tolerance, respect for others and oneself, and the absolute freedom of conscience.
Nondogmatic – recognizing that metaphysical beliefs are a personal matter, and refusing all dogmatic affirmation.
Universal – extending the bonds of fraternity to all humanity.
Inclusive – welcoming women and men alike, on equal footing, to labor together in mixed lodges for self-improvement and the progress of society.
The Grand Orient of California will affirm, without compromise, the motto:
Liberty, Equality, Fraternity.
The Grand Orient of California will be created by lodges and Freemasons across the State to establish a body faithful to the ideals of the Enlightenment.
Its mission will be:
To strengthen the democratic and fraternal governance of lodges.
To preserve the universality of Masonry while adapting it to the American and Californian context.
To provide lodges with a framework where reflection, fraternity, and the advancement of human dignity may flourish, free from sectarian or partisan divisions.
To build an inclusive and humanist Order, open to all seekers of knowledge and fraternity who meet the moral and initiatic standards of the Craft.
The grand orient will remain provisional until its first General Assembly of lodges convenes to elect its grand officers and adopt its permanent Constitution and General Regulations.
